A Promising , Hot
And Talented Family
Malaysia’s Top Hip-Hop Duo, Too Phat, turn producers
Fresh after their double platinum second album Plan B and winning Best Local
English Album Award at AIM 2002, Malique and Joe are back on the radio again…and
this time they brought along their family!
After releasing the now-legendary Tricks and Tales compilation three years
ago, introducing acts like Ferhad, Reefa and Naughtius Maximus, Positive Tone is
releasing a similar compilation with a new batch of promising hip hop talents in
Phat Family.
So what is Phat Family? Phat Family is a loose collective of hip hop groups
who for the past three years, have been performing and collaborating with Too
Phat. The initial idea of the Phat Family compilation was simple, according to
Malique of Too Phat: “We have a lot of good hip hop groups who never had the
opportunity to record their music properly. So this compilation will help the
groups featured on it achieve greater exposure.” Which is true, as listening to
the Phat Family compilation, one will notice the talents and diversity of
Malaysian hip hop.
The Phat Family compilation for the first time features the production
skills of both Joe Flizzow and Malique, who also contribute one new track, ‘Deep
Doo Doo’. The bouncy Southern hip hop flavoured track features a special
appearance by Helium B who exchanges fluid rhymes with both Joe and Malique.
The first single, ‘Phat Family Anthem’ sees groups like Too Phat, Teh Tarik
Crew, Phlowtron, MOB and Muchachaz joining forces with an infectious hook sung
by Liyana ‘Lil Boogie. Interludes by DJ T-Bone, DJ Goldfish and DJ Uno are also
interesting as it opens the doors for one of the five hip hop elements, turn-tablism.
Also, the compilation features the latest songs by up and coming hip hop
groups like Teh Tarik Crew, Phlowtron, MOB, Muchachaz and Allstarz Division. The
compilation also features three turntable interludes by DJ T-Bone, DJ Goldfish
and DJ Uno plus a special appearance by up and coming R&B singer Lyana ‘Lil
Boogie.
Crowd favourites and fast-rising Phlowtron, contribute two tracks, the
second single ‘Phlow-A-Tech’ (featuring Lyana ‘Lil Boogie) and the
beat-happening drum and bass-flavoured ‘Rain Dance (Shake Whatcha Mama Gave Ya)’.
Teh Tarik Crew also contribute two of their latest songs, the tabla-powered ‘Not
a Good Idea’ and the jazzy, sure fire hit ‘Time Tested’.
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony influenced MOB, also contribute two of their best
efforts to date on ‘Don’t ‘Cha Worry’ (featuring Ruffedge) and ‘Foo’. The
all-girl Muchachaz contribute a track, the catchy ‘Come On, Come On’ and the
Allstarz Division deliver their first ever recording in ‘Bring it Raw’.
All in all, Phat Family exposes the hottest acts from the local hip hop
scene and represents the next generation of Malaysian hip hop. If you want to
know where the future lies in Malaysia’s urban music, grab a copy of this
soon-to-be-legendary Phat Family compilation!

Who’s Who in Phat
Family
Too Phat
Without a doubt the leading force in Malaysian urban hip hop, Too Phat have
developed and matured a lot since their debut album Whuttadily? in 1999. Both
Malique and Joe Flizzow with long-time DJ, T-Bone, took the nation by storm with
their #1 hit ‘Anak Ayam’ off their double platinum (50,000 units sold) second
album Plan B. After more than three years trying to expose all their peer groups
by having them appearing on their previous albums, Too Phat spearheaded the Phat
Family compilation, hoping that the talents of these hip hop groups will be
heard and acknowledged by a bigger audience.
Phlowtron
One of the local hip hop groups that are highly tipped to succeed Too Phat,
Phlowtron comprises of Carleed, Atom and Poi. Though never appearing on any of
Too Phat’s previous albums, Phlowtron have been creating plenty of buzz within
the gig circuit with their stage antics and slick rhyming skills. As can be
heard in their two songs on the Phat Family compilation ‘Phlow-A-Tech’
(featuring Lyana ‘Lil Boogie) and ‘Raindance (Shake Whatcha Mama Gave Ya!)’, the
group is brimming with creativity and should be one of the local hip hop acts to
look for in the future.
MOB
Formed in 1998, Members of Blood (MOB) comprise three MCs, Shear, Saint and
Sam. Unlike the rest of the groups featured on the Phat Family compilation, MOB
is the only group that have adopted the rhyme-sing style that was made popular
by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. The band is not short of experience as they have
appeared on albums by established artists like Too Phat, Syafinaz and Innuendo.
Teh Tarik
Crew
Currently the most sought-after unsigned hip hop group, Teh Tarik Crew
comprise MCs Altimet, Fiquetional, Mizz Nina and DJ Fuzz. Formed in 1999,
Teh Tarik Crew was one of the few local hip hop groups to have released
their materials independently. Their independently released EP in 1999, Are
We Rap Stars Now? earned them international recognition when two of their
songs from the EP were chosen to be featured on MP3.com’s compilation Listen
Pick: Hip Hop along side established artists like Del tha Funky Homosapien
of Gorillaz. The band is currently in the midst of recording their debut
album.
Allstarz
Division
First known as Fat Cat Bomb Squad in 1999, Allstarz Division is a small
collective of MCs and DJs within the Phat Family. At the moment, the most
prominent members of Allstarz Division are Pac of Doja (TripDicz and Ledness
Flex) and Schmokin’ Twins (QD and Thymer). This is the group’s first ever
recorded material.
Muchachaz
The only all-girl hip hop group in the local hip hop scene, Muchachaz
comprise Noreen, Dalia and Renita. Though the group have never recorded
professionally, they have been performing regularly in the gig circuit
alongside the rest of the Phat Family. Noreen in the meantime, appeared on
‘Wanna Battle’ on Too Phat’s Plan B and Reefa’s The Key of R.
Liyana Lil’
Boogie
A little cousin of Joe Flizzow, Liyana ‘Lil Boogie is likely to become an
upcoming female solo R&B artist. In the Phat Family compilation, she
contributes her vocals on songs like the first single ‘Phat Family Anthem’
and ‘Phlow-A-Tech’.
